Who You Truly Are

If you don’t deliberately embrace your true identity and own your self-worth by receiving God’s unwavering love, you will be vulnerable to believe the lie that you don’t deserve victory. You must know that God intends you to be an overcomer, or you’ll continue to feel like a defeated victim.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power,love, and self-discipline.

~ 2 Timothy 1:7, NLT

Because of Christ's resurrection and the fact that the same power that raised Him to life now lives in you if you accept Him, you are a mighty warrior, a dauntless adventurer, a persistent overcomer, a shining light, an overwhelming conqueror, and an eternal winner.

#1 You are a mighty warrior.

"The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."

~ Judges 6: 12

Fight fiercely for your faith. The devil will try to steal it from you or destroy it altogether. Don’t let the enemy of your soul win. Run to your Warrior-Dad. He’s got your back, and He will never fail you.

We conquer evil, but never in our name or by our power. We triumph over evil by putting our faith in Jesus into action. The victorious ones are those who believe in and associate with Jesus, trusting Him who already secured our victory for us.

#2 You are a dauntless adventurer.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

~ Joshua 1:9

You weren’t meant to sit on the sidelines and watch the game. There are no positions for “bench warmer” in God’s kingdom. You are not intended to be a spectator to your own life.

God wants you to get out there and go after it, chase down the goal and wrestle for the prize in the mud and the rain. Anything less than a thrilling adventure leaves you restless and wanting something more that you can’t quite put your finger on.

God calls you to a holy adventure with Him, but you will never experience it if you refuse to get off the couch and out of your comfort zone. Victory always lies beyond the borders of the familiar places that feel comfortable to us.

#3 You are a persistent overcomer.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

~ Galatians 6:9

No one has promised you a life of ease and comfort. In fact, you’ve been warned to brace yourself for a rough ride. You are promised that though you are buffeted and tossed about, your enemy is powerless to destroy you.

If you hang on to Jesus, you might get thrown off now and then, but by His grace, He will give you the strength to rise again, brush off the dust, and get back in the saddle.

Don’t let the trouble overcome you. Remind yourself you were made to overcome the trouble by the power of Jesus. He has already overcome the trials and sorrows for you so that through Him you can share in His triumph.

Do you know who you really are? In Christ, you are a warrior, adventurer, overcomer, bright light, and conqueror. You are victorious!

#4 You are the shining light of Christ to a darkened world.

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

~ Matthew 5:14

Darkness is powerless to prevail against you. Even the tiniest light of Christ within you defeats the shadows. You need not fear the dark or whatever lurks in the shadows of your life. Jesus’ light is so bright and penetrating that no darkness can stand against even a flicker of it.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

~ John 1:5

The blackest night is powerless against the tiniest flame. As soon as light shines, the darkness flees. So it is with spiritual darkness. The frailest flame of faith in Christ will send the dark scurrying away.

#5 You are more than a conqueror.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed,but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned;struck down, but not destroyed.

~ 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, NIV

Whatever life throws at you, God’s love is always greater, always stronger. It is impossible to be separated from His love unless you stubbornly refuse to receive it. Open your arms wide and feel His comforting and protecting embrace as He walks through the storm with you.

Trouble, hardship, persecution, hunger, nakedness, exposure, danger, sword, life-threatening diagnosis, death of a loved one, life struggles, angels, demons, our present circumstances, our fears for the future, powers that are greater than we, the height of the obstacles before us, the depth of the pits we have sunk to, or anything else that can possibly exist or be imagined is utterly powerless to separate us from our Champion (Romans 8:31-39).

#6 You are victorious, not victimized.

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

~ Romans 8:37

Jesus’ victory is ironclad. He is unbeatable, and He wants to share His victory with you. Don’t you love it when the Olympic gold medalist pulls bronze and silver medalists up to the top tier as a gesture of good sportsmanship and camaraderie?

Jesus is forever at the top of the podium, and by comparison, we didn’t even get out of bed to make it to the trials on time. But He pulls us up to the top of the podium to share in His victory that we didn’t win and we don’t deserve—just because He loves us and it delights Him to do so. You are unbeatable, not because you are invincible but because Jesus is.

The ultimate victory we are to rejoice in is that we have the gift of eternal life with Jesus. This is the real victory—that sinful messy people can live forever in perfection and harmony with a holy and perfect God. This is the victory Jesus has won for us!

Since our strength is in Christ and our victory is through Him, even the smallest, weakest, youngest, newest, frailest believer can stand strong against the worst the devil can deal out if he stands firm in Jesus and not himself.

Jesus, help me see myself the way you see me. I want to embrace your love so I can experience the adventure You hand-crafted just for me. Thank you for sharing your victory with me. Let me not squander it.
