3 Simple Steps to Overcome Self-Limiting Beliefs

There are 3 easy-to-remember steps to getting rid of the lies that hold you back once and for all and living in the truth of who God created you to be. If you aren't sure what I mean by self-limiting beliefs or you don't know why you need to overcome them, then read this post first: The Real Reason You're Stuck. Don't forget to come back here!

  1. Recognize your self-limiting beliefs

  2. Reject the lies

  3. Replace lies with the truth

Keep in mind, I said “simple”, not “easy”. The steps are simple to learn but it will take time and effort to make them work.

Step 1: Recognize your self-limiting beliefs

Often, we have believed the lies for so long we never consider that they may not be true after all. These thoughts may be so automatic and ingrained, perhaps even subconscious, that we often aren’t really aware this is actually what we think about ourselves.

It’s time to get open and be honest. Ask God to search your heart and mind and reveal to you the lies you tell yourself. In order to cut out the cancerous thinking, you have to identify exactly where the problem is.

A helpful exercise to uncover false beliefs and how they are impacting your thinking is to use the A-B-C-D-E process. Read a simple but powerful example of how to do this yourself in this article.

Step 2: Reject the lies

Once you’ve uncovered the self-limiting beliefs that are keeping you stuck, it’s time to give it an eviction notice. You’ve targeted it as a lie and it’s no longer welcome to intrude your thoughts. Don’t invite it back in!

I have fresh eyes on this favorite verse:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

Hebrews 12:1-2, NLT [emphasis mine]

These are the first two verses of Hebrews, chapter 12. They come immediately after chapter 11’s description of the Faith Hall-of-Fame, which summarizes briefly innumerable ways that God worked mightily through those who just believed God more than they nursed their own weaknesses. This is called faith.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1, NIV

Here’s what we can learn from these verses.

  • Faith is required to live well and that means we won’t see everything or know all the answers.

  • There are things that aren’t necessarily sinful but still hold us back from being and doing all that God has prepared for us.

  • God has a race He plans for us to run and we only get one lifetime to accomplish it.

  • It takes perseverance to run the race well. (1 Cor 9:24)

  • The way to win at life is by keeping our eyes on Jesus, not our limitations or lies we believe about ourselves.

  • Jesus is the champion who gifts us the victory. (1 Cor 15:57) It’s not up to us to do everything. It’s okay that we are inadequate because He is all-sufficient.

Step 3: Replace lies with the truth

You can’t just leave a vacuum. You have to fill the hole left by the lie you booted out. (Mt 12:43-45) So you must search God’s word for truths to overcome the lies.

Bonus Step: Repeat often!

Okay, I know I said 3 steps but for those 3 steps to be effective, you have to do them more than once. You have to go through the steps multiple times a day and then do it again until it becomes your new way of thinking.

Have realistic expectations. You’re not going to overcome beliefs you’ve held for years in one afternoon. It takes time and practice with lots of repetition. Don’t give up! Perseverance is always worth it.

You're ready to Overcome your self-limiting beliefs!

So there you have it! Three simple steps to overcome self-limiting beliefs and be successful at what you were born to do.

I pray for you the same blessing the author wrote at the end of the letter to the Hebrews:

Now may the God of peace . . . equip you with all you need for doing his will.

May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him.

All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.

Hebrews 13:20-21
